Destin Beckoned...

Today, we visited Destin, Florida, a picturesque city on the Gulf, located 14 miles east of Navarre, and only a few short miles east of Fort Walton Beach
(another city on our list of places to see).

Destin is known for its colourful harbour.  Thanks to BP, it is very quiet at this time, with only the odd tourist walking along the boardwalk.  One of the local harbour staff explained that most charter boat owners were hired by BP following the oil spill and returned to a practically non-existant business.  Very sad, indeed.  But they are a very optimistic and resilient bunch and are looking forward to tourists returning very soon.

The restaurants offer all manner of seafood and the usual sea-themed souvenirs can be found in the harbour-front stores, admittedly of a much higher quality than we usually see in such tourist spots.

We enjoyed a nice long (very, very long!) stroll along the boardwalk and peeked in at a number of million-dollar boats.  Something to see!

This city is a must-see for anyone visiting the Gulf area of Florida.

  2. Ah you're becoming Americanized already with the miles thingy.
Keep up the good work. I enjoyed hearing about the aftermath of the BP spill.
