Driving Due South...

As retirees, we are in no rush to arrive at our southern destination and so, for the most part, our speed is slow and slower.  The advantage, of course, is getting to visit cool places along the way.  For example,
we spent three days in beautiful Brunswick, Georgia, just south of Savannah.

Nine miles to the east of Brunswick is Jekyll Island, a barrier island off the Atlantic ocean.  At the northern end of Jekyll Island is Driftwood Beach where we hunted for a few choice pieces of driftwood for Marc's whittling projects.  We were not disappointed!  As you can see from the picture below, there was a relative buffet of driftwood to be had!

We spent a couple hours just wandering the beach and walking along the paths paralleling the waterfront.  Upon discovering a sandbar which we both wanted to investigate, we had to jump over a small amount of water, to and from the main part of the beach.  On the way off the sandbar, Marc --being the gentleman he is -- reached across to "yank" me over the water as I jumped, but yanked a little too hard, resulting in me performing my version of a Swan Lake pirouette and landing on my behind in the wet sand!  After a good laugh, I picked myself (and my pride) up, and we headed back to the truck.

Our last stop on Jekyll Island was to visit a homestead built in 1736.  Although there may not be much left today, we found it fascinating that seashells had been used in the construction of the main structure which remains, other than the roof, quite sturdy to this day.
