After much consideration, we've decided on a destination for our upcoming six-month trip south. We will be returning to Alabama, more specifically Robertsdale, Alabama. Too often, when one mentions wanting to visit Alabama, the response they get is 'Why'? Until you've actually spent time there, you wouldn't understand why.
Keep in mind that the State of Alabama borders the State of Florida. So what's in an invisible line? Whether you've got one foot in Florida or one foot in Alabama, things are mostly the same. Of course, there aren't as many tourist traps or bells and whistles in Alabama, but that's just fine with us.
The ocean is the same blue-green, our favourite beach being Orange Beach where we spend
hours lazing about, sifting through the sand for special shells, or sitting in our beach chairs reading a book, at times just staring at the waves.
To us, Alabama's biggest asset is its people. They are down to earth, welcoming and always willing to lend a hand, be it with tourism advice, driving directions or any other situation in which you might be needing assistance.
If you find yourself in Alabama during Mardi Gras, do take the time to attend a parade or five! During our last stay four years ago, we took in one parade in Fairhope and three in Mobile. Each one is individually structured by it's Krewe, so repetition is never an issue. One of our favourite parades was the one we attended in the quaint town of Fairhope. It was a Mardi Gras Pet Parade. If you've never seen dozens of dogs and cats dressed up for Mardi Gras, this one's worth it.
Restaurants in south Alabama are plentiful. The seafood is scrumptious and the Mexican food is the best. Two areas which offer an array of food choices are Foley and Spanish Fort. What more could you ask for?
So stay tuned for upcoming posts about the beautiful State of Alabama.
