The Alamo...

For Americans who remember their history lessons, The Alamo is a well-known landmark.  As Canadians, we did not have that advantage, so Marc and I were curious about its significance.  The Daughters of
the Republic of Texas have been entrusted by the Texas State Legislature since 1905 with the care and maintenance of The Alamo, and are on hand to answer questions.

Without going into too much detail (for fear of getting the details wrong!), the Alamo was originally home to missionaries for nearly seventy years and was later occupied by Spanish military until the Texas Revolution of 1836.  Many men lost their lives in defense of The Alamo and, for this reason, is referred to as "The Shrine of Texas Liberty."

The compound itself is lovely.  It is comprised of 11 areas, some buildings and others courtyard-type outdoor areas.  Although the buildings are very old, they have obviously been well-cared-for and are immaculate.  The plants and vines add to the beauty of The Alamo and one feels the need to tread carefully and to whisper, as though in a library.

Whether or not you are an American, this is an important piece of history you will definitely want to see.  (If you wish to read the entire history of The Alamo, please go to above link.)
