The deer are dear!

During our recent visit to the Keys, we noticed several road signs which cautioned drivers to be very careful of Key Deer as they are an endangered species.  As Canadians, we know for a fact that
deer are definitely not an endangered species.  In fact, WE are in danger of being over-run by deer, there are so many!

When we mentioned this to our friends, Mike and Shirley, they explained the reason for these signs.  Key Deer can only be found in the Florida Keys.  Physically, they are much smaller in size than regular North American deer.  They suggested we watch for them on our return drive to Key West from Marathon that evening, and sure enough, there were Key Deer everywhere. They are very cute, with their stubby little legs.  The drawback is they are not afraid of humans, which can be a hazzard to both the deer and drivers!
